The Flemington Historic Preservation Commission's main role is planning and advocating for the protection and appreciation of Flemington's historic and architecturally significant resources. Because of the important history of the area and the beautiful array of architectural styles and building types, sixty five percent (65%) of the Borough of Flemington is included in the Historic District and listed on both the State of New Jersey AND National Registers of Historic Places.
Primary tasks as a Commission require review of applications for home and property renovations, additions, facade changes and signage within the Downtown Historic District. The HPC provides guidance in planning and preserving all historic resources within Flemington and serves as an advisory commission to the Planning Board in an effort to uphold the Borough's Historic Preservation Ordinance, which is consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Properties.
Goals of the Commissions are to preserve the character of Flemington's Historic District by encouraging the retention of its historic buildings and features and by encouraging maintenance and repair be performed with respect to the building and its character. Through HPC sponsored workshops and events, they provide the Community with an appreciation and understanding of the local cultural history of the area. The Commission strives to keep the history in Historic Flemington.
